Guest of the Week: My Roommate! Shelley Osborne

Almost a year ago I sat next to a girl with short brown hair in film class and a almost year later I'm living in her house. Shale has quickly become one of my closest friends and her style is so unique. Any time I open her closet I'm bombarded by bright patterns upon patterns which is just as refreshing as the delicious vegan/gluten free food she cooks. Her style ranges from classic French New Wave cinema to birkenstock all natural mom living in San Francisco to poetry student from Brooklyn. I am very lucky to have made friends with such a cultured and hilarious person who is always up to be photographed.

Item of the Week: Overall Shorts

These are from a month ago but wow they have been worn at least twice a week since. Comfortable, cute, and casual enough for me to wear anywhere I'd definitely suggest. Wear them with any color (although I like white best for a clean look.) or any shoes. Deep pockets are good for holding anything you might need. 10/10

Blue Period

I'm back from the beach and back on my computer. This weekend I moved out of my parents house and into a new apartment (it's so weird to be out but I love it here.) Today it is raining so I figure I might as well post a rainy day outfit! I love to dress to reflect the weather so today I'm in shades of blue and gray. Pairing high waisted jeans and a light gray crop top with a light breezy dark blue jacket makes it easy to transfer from being inside to out on this cool stormy day. What else to pair both with then a delicious cold brew that my roommate made me (with some coffee nut ;) ). Shoes are, as always for me, optional.

Guest of the Week: Daniel Wrenn on "Dad Fashion"

Dad fashion. It’s exactly what you’d think it is: people dressing as middle aged dads or using the elements of our tacky father’s outfits to accentuate our own styles.  I am over the moon for Dad fashion. It’s a relatively small, recent movement within alternative communities. Often the ingredients for a good dad-dy outfit include tube socks, glasses, loose shirts and loose fitting knee length shorts. Also included in your kit to becoming a fashion dad: high wadders, suspenders, and certain button up shirts, but always always always tube socks. Also, don’t let the name fool you. I’ve seen people of all gender identities rule with this look. It’s become so ironic that it isn’t ironic anymore. My good friend Daniel Wrenn is in these photos modeling what he considers to be his take on Dad-fash, and out of anyone I’ve personally met he owns it best.  We plan to do a separate post entirely on this subject soon, but as for now I definitely wanted to just show off Daniel as my unique guest of the week.

Literature

Just like with anything else, when interested in a subject it is important to research it! I found this book in Barnes and Nobles one day last winter. It was in the bargain section, naturally I figured it would be your run of the mill coffee table book, but it actually turned out this was not the case. The book is Fashion: A History from the 18th to the 20th Century released by the Kyoto Costume Institute. Inside are gorgeous photos of clothes from the collection, men's and women's, as well as detailed descriptions of material, designers, and the way fashion relates to history and the zeitgeist of the centuries mentioned. I would definitely recommend, even if for just the pictures.

Item of the Week: Little Shift Dress

I really need to start coming up with more creative post names! This dress was a recent purchase from Forever 21 but I've worn it at least five or six days since. It's a slip dress, pale pink or a light tan depending on the light, so pale and such a dainty color that it's hardly detectable. It'll make you feel like the most delicate little ballerina, with glass bones and gossamer skin. I also get a really vintage 20's vibe from the embroidery and the eyelash lace trim, as well as the frank shapelessness of the dress (evoking the style of shift dress which rose to reign in the 1920's). I wear it with black oxfords just to punctuate it with a contrasting color (and style) but I feel a good pair of sandals would pair well. The back (not pictured) is open and stringy so wear your hair up to show it off!
